Container Gardening
Container plants can spruce up your yard even if you have a large garden and flower beds. By using a beautiful container you can highlight a special plant so it stands out from a block of plants and gives your outdoor space character. You can even make an ordinary ground cover plant like a Bar Harbor juniper the center of attention.
The great thing about container plants is that you can move them seasonally so they get more or less sun as needed and you can even bring them inside during the dead of winter. Use these plants as decor; move them around the yard or patio to a more pleasing spot anytime you want. Since your special plant is in a pot by itself you can spoil it and give it exactly the right soil, fertilizer, sunlight and water that it needs to thrive.
Try combining plants in one big container for a very unique look. Use several different plants of different heights, colors and textures. A good example is using tall daffodils in the center with paper-white narcissus that are fragrant and slightly shorter next to it and then filling the rest of the space with colorful violas and primroses. Another option is to use one great plant species and plant it in several terra-cotta containers of various sizes and shapes. Set them in a unique grouping for an eye catching display.
Hanging plants are a great addition to a walkway or patio. Try a basket of colorful bougainvillea with the vines trailing down or a mix of different colored petunias. For shady spots you can fill a basket with fuchsias, begonias and impatiens.
Remember almost any plant can be used in container gardening. Keep the care instructions that you get from the nursery and give your new plant some special attention and it will be fine.
