Down lighting can be a technique that adds security to ones garden and home, while up lighting can highlight the person’s visual interest. Shadowing is placing the light in front of an object; say for example that a flower or a tree, which will create a shadowy effect that can bring drama to ones garden. The opposite one is silhouetting, in which the lights are being put at the back of the object to create a striking silhouette. Other techniques include, spotlighting, underwater lighting, moonlighting, flood washing, step lighting and pathway lighting.

Garden lighting can provide a great place for outdoor parties and get together. A person with a beautiful garden might want to highlight this by using different kinds of lighting. It can be a romantic place where one can bring his/her date to, and just have those relaxing and peaceful moments, while enjoying the surroundings. It is really important to have a garden lighted very well.
