Outdoor Lawn Furniture – Enhance It With Tips For Planting Container Gardens
In my many years of traveling I have seen a wide variety of very unusual containers used for planting flowers and gardens to enhance the beauty of outdoor lawn furniture on lawns, gardens, patios, porches, poolside and decks. I have seen everything from beautiful Grecian urns to kitchen sinks proving that a container garden can be made from just about anything you have laying around the house that will hold soil. The possibilities are endless.
Flowers and plants seem to flourish in containers because the conditions are an ideal setting that can be easily controlled. Flowers and plants in containers benefit from favorable conditions in regard to the soil, moisture, drainage and nutrients. A small amount of effort can achieve great impact. Container gardens are a great solution to complete your outdoor lawn furniture setting because they can be placed anywhere that you need a punch of color and left there as long as you desire. The plantings in a container can be assembled in an array of colors, shapes, sizes and planting material. Container gardens are best considered as accessories to your outdoor lawn furniture and used in that manner.
When considering your container garden the first and foremost important item is to make a plan. You should determine if your container will be a shade loving container that sits next to your porch swing or one that will flourish in the days of full sun. When you have made that determination, start searching for your container. You may choose to use something you want to recycle such as an old tire, a child’s wagon, a tree stump, an old boot or a container that you purchase at your local garden store. There is no right or wrong container. The choice is yours. The next step is choosing your plants. For a vibrant container, pick a variety of heights, colors and texture. Fill the bottom of the container with pebbles, stones, or broken terra cotta pot pieces (my favorite) for drainage. Fill the container about half full with a good quality potting soil. Remove the plants and flowers that you’ve selected from their packaging and place them in your container. It is best to place low growing plants around the edge and build in height to the center of the container. Once you have all of the plants in place, fill the container with potting soil. Water the container. Water the container 1 to 3 times per week depending upon your climate. Water the container weekly with a water soluble flowering plant food. Sit back in your outdoor lawn furniture and watch it grow.
Whether you decide to spend a little money or an extravagant amount to create your lush container garden let your imagination go wild. Be creative. You will experience such satisfaction when the work is completed and you are relaxing in your outdoor lawn furniture among the beautiful containers that you created.
