Planting Container Plants Outdoors

Submitted by admin on July 11, 2010 – 5:27 amNo Comment

Outdoor plants are great for patios, porches, decks and rooftop container gardens. Lined up on stairs or balanced on railings, outdoor plants can offer both a wide variety of color most of the year. Whether potted in urns, baskets, and barrels or on top of pedestals, a large number of outdoor plants provide different backgrounds, textures and arrangement possibilities throughout the year, according to blooming season.

Many varieties of plants, flowers and shrubs prefer lots of sunlight. Some of these types of plants include, but are certainly not limited to:

o Azalea

o Bougainvillea

o Agave varieties

o Clematis climber vines

o Ficus

o Jasmine

o Morning Glories

Each of the above mentioned varieties will offer a rainbow of color for your outdoor container garden and will soak up the sun without wilting if care is taken to water adequately. Many such plants thrive in full sunlight, and some are even drought resistant. Of course, depending on the climate where you live, you can find dozens of varieties that will prefer the temperatures of your region.

If you have more shade on your patio or balcony than direct sunlight, you might want to consider some of these plants, which thrive in shade:

o Camellias

o Kalmia

o Tree Ivy

o Fountain bamboo

o Laurel

o Ginger Lilies

Before you purchase plants, read the planting guidelines attached to them for their preferred type of soil, their need for full sun, partial sun or full shade, as well as their hardiness ratings. Some plants do well outside all year long, while in colder climates, many container plants will need to be brought inside to protect them from frost. Also keep in mind that many plants don’t tolerate any degree of frost and need special care during colder seasons.

Outdoor plants are great for patios, porches, decks and rooftop container gardens. No matter the type of container, urns, baskets, and barrels or on top of pedestals, a large number of outdoor plants provide different backgrounds, textures and arrangement possibilities throughout the year, according to blooming season.
