Why do you need to clean canvas awnings
Nothing can be uglier than the sight of dirty canvas awnings. Guests and friends can get the wrong idea about you from these awnings. However both sides need to be cleaned every week to get rid of dirt, cobwebs, insects and plant materials.
Canvas awnings: How to clean them
Step 1 Make a cleaning mixture by taking a 50% mild dish cleaning liquid in water warmed to about 102 F. Make sure the mixture is blend well before transferring the contents in to a spray bottle. Do not use any chlorine based cleaner as that might rot the canvas fabric
Step 2 Use a ladder to get to the awning. Clean the surface thoroughly to get rid of all kinds of loose foreign matter on the awning.
Step 3 After cleaning the surface spray it with the cleaning solution that you have prepared.
Step 4 With a scrub brush scrub away the entire surface of the awning. You might find the scrub brush inadequate if your awning is large. In that case get hold of a long handled broom to do the scrubbing work. Similarly, repeat steps 2 and 3 for the awning underside.
Step 5 Now clean the washing liquid away with a water hose. Next apply a weatherproofing sealant meant for canvas to both the upper surface and the underside. It is important to use a weather proofing sealant to protect the canvas from the elements.
